Chamber Series - Schubert's 'Trout' Quintet Programme to include: Schubert Piano Quintet in A major 'Trout' Beatrice Phillips violin Guy Button viola Hannah Sloane cello Toby Hughes double bass Mark Austin piano Schubert’s much-loved ‘Trout’ Quintet is a classic of the chamber repertoire. The title comes from the fourth movement, which uses the melody of one of Schubert’s most tuneful songs, ‘Die Forelle’/‘The Trout’ as its theme. Written for the unusual combination of violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano, the work explores a more spacious texture than is normally possible in a piano quintet. Schubert uses this to great advantage, for instance allowing the cello often to sing lyrical melodies rather than supply the bass line. Very few works of music take the listener on such a sunny and optimistic journey, only occasionally tempered by a hint of melancholy. |
