Chamber Series - Schubert's 'Trout' Quintet

Programme to include:

Schubert             Piano Quintet in A major 'Trout'

Beatrice Phillips violin
Guy Button viola
Hannah Sloane cello
Toby Hughes double bass
Mark Austin piano

Schubert’s much-loved ‘Trout’ Quintet is a classic of the chamber repertoire. The title comes from the fourth movement, which uses the melody of one of Schubert’s most tuneful songs, ‘Die Forelle’/‘The Trout’ as its theme.

Written for the unusual combination of violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano, the work explores a more spacious texture than is normally possible in a piano quintet. Schubert uses this to great advantage, for instance allowing the cello often to sing lyrical melodies rather than supply the bass line. Very few works of music take the listener on such a sunny and optimistic journey, only occasionally tempered by a hint of melancholy.

Chamber Series - Virtuoso of the Keyboard

Haydn             Sonata in E-flat major Hob.XVI:52
Beethoven      Sonata in C major op. 53 'Waldstein'
Chopin            Scherzo no.1 in B minor
Liszt               Sonata in B minor

                                                  Florian Mitrea   piano

Young pianist Florian Mitrea’s ‘stupendous virtuosity’ (Süddeutsche Zeitung) is increasingly recognised around the world.
He has performed at Carnegie Hall and venues across Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Switzerland, China, Japan and South Korea, and won numerous competitions.

For this recital he performs four masterpieces for piano solo, ranging from the classical elegance of Haydn to the emotional turbulence of Liszt’s epic B minor sonata. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear an artist of exceptional talent who delivers compelling interpretations with breathtaking virtuosity.
